Abstract

An overview of the publication of comic images in the 1830s suggesting how the waning of the caricature tradition took place within a vastly increased market for popular visual culture. The energetic entrepreneurial activities of comic artists, publishers and magazine editors built on the new reprographic potential of wood engraving and lithography to transform or invent new print genres that offered space for humorous illustration.
