Abstract

An installation of two 1m square oil paintings: War (2017) and Peace (2017), installed in the windows of APEX Travel World Choice for the New Mills Festival. The paintings, in situ, interact with the shop frontage, especially the typescript shop sign 'World Choice' which is above and between the works which occupy the two windows either side of the entrance door. Conceptually, the world of tourism and consumer choice is linked directly to the ideas of War and Peace on a global scale. Obviously, the cultural lineage of Tolstoy is in the concept mix. War is represented by a growing tide of chaos and violence and Peace by an idyllic 'get-away-from-it-all' beach location. In this, the installation is in the discourse of 'political painting' but takes the 'high' art of oil painting to the high street. As a part of the Festival it shares the theme, "Around the World".
