Abstract

Got A Light
My work is concerned with challenging the recurrent female stereotypes that permeate popular culture, where women and girls are frequently represented as erotic, sexualized, infantilized, vulnerable or submissive, in imagery designed to satisfy the male gaze.
To redress the balance, and challenge these unhelpful, stereotypical depictions of women, my portraiture work proposes an alternative vision of women as confident, assertive, uncompromising.
‘Got A Light’ is a watercolour portrait of friend and colleague Lizzie Cardwell. It forms part of a series called 'Portraits of Personal Style', in which a diverse range of women and girls with a nonconformist approach to personal expression are depicted in ways that defy patriarchal conventions of female representation.
In this portrait, Lizzie’s gaze is direct, her expression is assertive, and the lowered viewpoint suggests an authority that is rare in depictions of women.
Representations of colour and texture are an important feature of my work, and here the deep, impenetrable darkness of Lizzie’s fur coat provides a dramatic foil to the light on her face. The rendering of both light and shadow in the portrait owe as much to the caprices and vagaries of water-based inks as they do to closely observed detail.
