Abstract

Sadie Clayton
My work is concerned with challenging the recurrent female stereotypes that permeate popular culture, where women and girls are frequently represented as erotic, sexualized, infantilized, vulnerable or submissive, in imagery designed to satisfy the male gaze.
To redress the balance, and challenge these unhelpful, stereotypical depictions of women, my portraiture work proposes an alternative vision of women as confident, assertive, uncompromising.
This detailed portrait was painted by Carol Ryder between 2021 and 2022. The sitter is Sadie Clayton, an artist of Jamaican and British heritage.
