Abstract
This article explores voluntary police resignations through the broader lens of workforce expectations and the need for a more sustainable approach to policing careers. It begins with a review of the literature on police resignation and retention, followed by an overview of recent findings on why individuals choose to join the police, and an analysis of Freedom of Information Act (2024) data on voluntary resignations. These findings are then examined in relation to wider workforce research to consider the implications of rising resignation rates. The article concludes with recommendations for further research and practical strategies to support leadership, well being and a sustainable model of policing in the years to come.
