Abstract

Despite the growing adoption of Responsible Management Education (RME), there is a lack of validated instruments for assessing how its pedagogical principles are implemented in business school teaching practices. This study aims to develop and empirically validate a measurement scale based on the five pedagogical principles of the i5 Principles for Responsible Management Education framework: Joyful, Socially Interactive, Actively Engaging, Meaningful, and Iterative. Drawing from responses of 709 professors from business schools in 30 different countries across multiple regions, the study employed exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses to assess the dimensional structure and properties of the proposed scale. The findings provide empirical support for the five-dimensional structure and demonstrate satisfactory reliability and validity of the resulting i5 scale, which can be used as a practical instrument to assess and monitor the implementation of impactful pedagogical practices in responsible management education. The scale can support educators and administrators in identifying pedagogical strengths and areas for improvement, while also enabling researchers to examine the relationships between i5-aligned teaching practices and educational outcomes. The originality of this study lies in operationalizing the i5 PRME framework as an empirically tested measurement instrument, thereby providing a basis for systematic assessment and further research on the pedagogical implementation of responsible management education in business schools. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed, and limitations and directions for future research are outlined.
