The ‘service-profit chain’ model has proved to be of use for both analysing and improving the operations of private sector businesses. This model considers the profitability and growth of service organisations to be primarily the result of employee and customer loyalty. This research studied a community food cooperative, based in the North West UK. Thirteen semi-structured interviews were conducted with key informants connected to the cooperative. Data from the interviews were analysed using template analysis and an analytic generalisation approach to support, reject or modify the relationships in the service-profit chain model. As a result of this analysis a modified service-profit chain model appropriate for a food cooperative is proposed and discussed. This modified model has been named the ‘service-community benefit chain’. The value and limitations of the research are discussed. Further research involving a wider range of organisations and testing of the model is proposed.
