Abstract

Sneakers, trainers, kicks, webs, strides, soles, creps, beaters, trabs or trainees, whatever you call your footwear, there is a particular tribe who are obsessive about theirs…
Sneaker enthusiasts are attached to their possessions unlike any other conscious community. From the birth of the Terrace Casual in Liverpool, UK, to today’s designer latest ‘drop’, Sole-Zine is a poster-zine dedicated to documenting British Trainer Culture. This ongoing research project acts as a social documentary archive, preserving subcultures, raising awareness of specific artisanal craftspeople, materials, techniques, and process, adding fresh discourse to a field of research under-represented in academia. Sole-Zine investigates the unique seekers and highlights this much-loved fashion area giving rise to the tribes and cohesive socio-groups who define and are defined by values and tensions around status, belonging, and the need for individuality: Obsession, Style, and Place.

The Sole-Zine 07 Community exhibition in the ERL, offered an opportunity to showcase the back catalogue of Sole-Zine, whilst data collecting for the 07 Community issue. It was also an opportunity to view rare and vintage trainers from collectors and founders of the adi8sUK group. As well as providing a forum for discussion, to open debate and share experiences from within the British Trainer Community. Experience live trainer workshops by artisans and experts and learn tips on how to extend the life-span of trainers. Nurturing a sense of preservation, and nostalgia around a much loved but under-represented field of research.
