Abstract

In the second part of her series, Carol Ryder looks at the ways in which illustrative techniques are used within the industry.

Early in 2007, Ryder was invited by Rose Sinclair, the editor of “Just 4Textiles” magazine, to write 2 articles about fashion illustration for “Just 4 Textiles” magazine, that were to be supported by original illustrations also produced by Ryder.

“Just 4 Textiles” is a national magazine dedicated to supporting textile design educators, focused on keeping abreast of new developments, and offering student-friendly ways of presenting them.

The articles, “Fashion Illustration, an Overview”, and “Fashion Illustration, Practical Applications”, were published both in hard copy and online, in May 2007 and July 2007 respectively.

Ryder’s original illustrations were used on the front cover and inside front cover of the magazine, as well as throughout the articles themselves.

The published articles called on over 20 years of Ryder’s own experience as a fashion illustrator and designer, and more recently as an educator in fashion illustration and fashion and textile design.

The articles were subject to approval by the magazine’s editing panel before publication.

As well as editor for “Just 4 Textiles” magazine, Rose Sinclair is the national trainer in the UK for Speedstep CAD / CAM software, and in 2006 received the D&T Excellence Award for Subject Teacher Training Design and Technology.
