Abstract
With its roots in the work of the American philosopher of education John Dewey, project-based language learning (PBLL) has become increasingly prominent over the last several decades due to its interactionist and collaborative orientation, which fits well with contemporary approaches to second language acquisition. The turn towards the use of digital technologies from the start of the new millennium afforded students and teachers further opportunities to explore how PBLL can benefit from their communicative and collaborative aspects in such domains as telecollaboration. More recent research on technology-mediated project-based language learning has turned to consider how projects can engage students in addressing social justice issues and grand challenges, such as the climate crisis. While PBLL faces limitations in traditionally testing-oriented educational systems, the more widespread use of digital technologies has also challenged language educators and policymakers to consider the role of project-based approaches in defining the future role of language learning.
