Abstract
Although the title of this article bears the name "Mohandes al-Mulk," its primary focus is neither his life nor his mathematics. Rather, the article introduces him and seeks to accurately illuminate his role in Iran's transition to modern mathematics for the reader. In fact, Mohandes al-Mulk's connection to the Dar al-Fonun, both as a student and later as a teacher, along with his engagement with mathematical developments beyond the Dar al-Fonun, positions him as a window into a pivotal moment in the history of Iranian mathematics. This was a time when Iranian mathematics was transitioning away from the traditions of rhetorical mathematics and entering the modern world of symbolic mathematics. For the first time, this article uses that "window" to examine this critical period in history and its main contributors.
