Abstract

This Article undertakes a critical assessment of the development of the 'mature minor' rule or Gillick principle over the last thirty-one years in the UK and the current status of the principle in relation to parental responsibilities, children's competence to consent to treatment and children's rights under English law. It also questions the question of whether there has been and adoption, operation and development of a similar principle in other common law jurisdictions such as the USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.
