Abstract

An examination of the unsung hero's of municipal Modernist Architecture, the local libraries, fire stations and art galleries of small towns. This important and often over-looked body of public works comprises an important legacy of the rapid growth in the provision of public buildings during the 1950s and 60s. This article discusses four examples from the north-west of England and makes a call for a wider appreciation of these structures which are reaching the end of their initial intended lifespan.
