Abstract
Carol Ryder is an amateur portrait artist, living and working in the UK. She is interested in expressions of personal style, and the complex codes of communication that we as humans use to disclose – or disguise – aspects of our personality, mood, status, ideals and beliefs.
Ryder’s watercolour portraiture work challenges the bland homogeneity and repetitious female stereotypes that permeate popular culture, depicting a diverse range of individuals with idiosyncratic and nonconformist approaches to personal style. She believes it is important to document and celebrate the valuable contribution these individuals make to the broader landscape of contemporary style and culture.
