Abstract
Increasingly tourists are stepping into prison cells and closing the doors behind them. Ireland has a growing number of prison museums and each year they welcome over 750,000 visitors. This chapter looks at the commodification of the experience – be that in the tour, museum or gift shop. It explores the development and operation of these museums and heritage sites and considers the complexities around telling stories associated with crime and punishment.
