Abstract

Against the background of the increasing prominence of secondary research in the humanities and social sciences, this chapter first explores the different types of systematic review available to researchers, before providing a specific example of how a technological tool can be used by researchers in applied linguistics to conduct systematic reviews. Having established this context, the chapter provides a worked example of the researching and writing of a systematic literature review that was part of an externally funded project on gender equality and English language teacher training in four African countries. For this purpose, an open access tool called Rayyan was used to facilitate the process in what is often a demanding task of searching, scanning and coding the sometimes hundreds or even thousands of items potentially involved in the review. In conclusion, the strengths, opportunities and limitations of using Rayyan as a technological tool to aid research involving systematic reviews are discussed.
