Abstract

My work is concerned with challenging the recurrent female stereotypes that permeate popular culture, where women and girls are frequently represented as erotic, sexualized, infantilized, vulnerable or submissive, in imagery designed to satisfy the male gaze.
To redress the balance and challenge these unhelpful, stereotypical depictions of women, my portraiture work proposes an alternative vision of women as confident, assertive, uncompromising.
Zoom Call and Got A Light were painted by Carol Ryder between 2022 and 2023. The sitters are Jan Bigg-Wither, and Lizzie Cardwell.
