Abstract
An autoethnographic approach is employed to explore lived experiences navigating the UK education system and Higher Education (HE) as a child and young person (CYP) living with visual impairment (VI) and other conditions. Through a series of reflections, I demonstrate the shift from little educational support within mainstream provision, to discovering a love of learning at university where my needs could be met appropriately. Importantly, this has helped shape my career working in the HE sector training future educators. This contributes to existing literature, which seeks to demonstrate some of the issues around access and participation in education for CYP with VI and other conditions, but also recognises the positive impact when non-medical help and holistic support is available to enable success. The paper concludes by offering some recommendations to educators working with CYP with VI on ensuring effective access and participation in education.
