Abstract
Virtual reality facilitates a more comprehensive stage for conveying knowledge. By immersing an individual into an ultra-realistic setting, a user is able to learn about a subject by living it rather than only hearing about the topic. As such, this research involves using an actual building information model of a proton beam therapy treatment unit, from which an immersive virtual reality recreation is constructed. The application acts as a metric for supporting patients by providing an opportunity for the individual to be mentally prepared for the treatment process. Additionally, this application has the potential to streamline the productivity process of the proton beam treatment within a hospital setting. An assessment of the virtual reality proton beam therapy unit is conducted through a keystroke level analysis of the user navigating within the virtual environment. Three subsequent potential use-case scenarios are presented. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first virtual reality application of a proton beam therapy unit in the UK..
