Abstract
My work is concerned with challenging the recurrent female stereotypes that permeate Western visual culture, where women and girls are frequently represented as erotic, sexualized, infantilized, vulnerable or submissive, in imagery designed to satisfy the male gaze. This watercolour portrait of Nicole Denny, highlighted with imitation gold leaf, is one of a series that celebrates nonconformist approaches to female personal style. I believe it is important to highlight and showcase the valuable contribution these women make to the broader landscape of contemporary style and culture as an antidote to the familiar, patriarchally prescribed visions of women in the mainstream media and visual arts.
